Buying solar products from China: the complete guide
China makes the overwhelming majority of the world's solar hardware — the same factories supply the big Western brands and the no-name listings. That means genuine bargains exist, and so do listings engineered to look like them. This guide covers how to read panel and battery specs, catch dishonest ratings before you pay, get lithium goods shipped legally, and vet a vendor from the other side of the world.
The one-minute version: trust physics over titles (~200 W per m² of panel, ~100 Wh per kg of LiFePO4), demand certificate numbers not logos, never let anyone air-mail you a big lithium battery, and pay for a third-party inspection before releasing the balance on any container order.
1. Panels: types and how to read the spec sheet
Cell types, in the order you'll meet them
- Monocrystalline (mono / PERC / N-type TOPCon) — the current standard. Black cells, 20–23% efficiency. N-type TOPCon is the newer generation: slightly more efficient, better in heat, and worth a small premium.
- Polycrystalline — blue-ish cells, older tech, 15–17% efficient. Still fine per watt-dollar for stationary off-grid use, but factories are phasing it out; much current poly stock is old inventory.
- Flexible / semi-flexible (ETFE) — mono cells laminated in plastic. Handy for curved RV and boat roofs, but they run hotter (which costs output), age faster, and are the single most misrated category on the market. ETFE surface is worth having over cheaper PET.
- Thin-film — rare in retail channels; if a listing says thin-film at a bargain price it is usually mislabeled a-Si with very low real output.
The numbers that matter
- Pmax under STC — the honest rating: output at 1000 W/m² and 25°C. Real-world output peaks around 75–85% of STC on a good day.
- Area sanity check — quality mono runs roughly 200–220 W per square metre. Measure the listed dimensions and multiply. A 116×54 cm panel (~0.63 m²) is a ~130 W panel; a listing calling it "300W" is lying, whatever the sticker says.
- Vmp / Voc — must match your charge controller's input window. Many "12V" flexible panels are actually ~18 Vmp — fine for MPPT, marginal for cheap PWM.
- Temperature coefficient — around −0.3%/°C for good mono, −0.35% or worse for budget cells. On a hot roof this is the difference between 90% and 80% output.
- Tolerance — honest sheets say "0/+5W". A sheet with no tolerance line is a sheet written by the marketing department.
2. Spotting a dishonest listing before you pay
- The wattage ladder — one photo, one price, and a menu reading "100W / 300W / 600W / 1000W". The price barely changes with the wattage. Real panel cost is dominated by silicon area; a 600W panel cannot cost $15 more than a 100W one. You are choosing which sticker gets glued on.
- Battery weight math — LiFePO4 stores about 90–120 Wh per kg at the pack level. A "2304Wh" power station listed at 8 kg shipping weight is physically impossible (a real one weighs ~22 kg). The shipping weight in the freight section is usually more honest than the title.
- Peak vs. continuous watts — "3000W" in a power-station title is often the inverter's surge figure. Continuous output and Wh capacity are the numbers you'll live with.
- Borrowed photos — reverse-image-search the gallery. Renders and photos lifted from a brand-name product are a walk-away signal.
- Review pattern — on marketplace listings, sort reviews by recent and look for photos of a multimeter or a charge controller screen. Five-star reviews that only praise fast shipping tell you nothing about output.
- Price floor — bare panels leave Chinese factories at roughly $0.10–0.20 per watt in volume. Retail single-unit pricing below ~$0.30/W shipped should make you suspicious; below ~$0.20/W it's a sticker, not a panel.
3. Power stations and batteries
- Chemistry: LiFePO4 vs NMC — LiFePO4 (LFP) is heavier per Wh but gives 3000+ cycles and is far more tolerant of abuse; it's the right choice for storage and power stations. NMC is lighter (laptops, drones) but 500–1000 cycles and fussier. "Lithium" with no chemistry stated usually means recycled or B-grade cells.
- Cycle-life claims — "6000 cycles" is a cell-manufacturer's lab figure at gentle discharge. A pack built from those cells realistically delivers 2000–3500 useful cycles. Still excellent — just don't pay extra for the bigger number.
- Inverter quality inside power stations — insist on pure sine wave output (cheap units ship modified sine, which hums or kills electronics), and check the continuous AC rating against what you plan to plug in.
- Paperwork that must exist — UN38.3 test summary (transport safety), MSDS sheet, and for EU/US resale a CE/UKCA or UL/FCC file. A vendor who can't produce a UN38.3 summary cannot legally ship you the product — which tells you how it will be shipped.
4. Inverters and charge controllers
- MPPT vs PWM — MPPT controllers harvest 20–30% more from the same panels and cost only a little more from Chinese vendors; PWM only makes sense for tiny systems. Beware "MPPT" in the title of $12 controllers — genuine MPPT needs an inductor and heatsink; a 150 g controller is PWM with a dishonest label.
- Hybrid inverters — the all-in-one inverter/charger/MPPT units from the big Shenzhen/Foshan makers are genuinely good value now, but confirm your grid type (230V/50Hz vs 120V/60Hz, split-phase for North America) before ordering — many listings ship 230V-only.
- Certification for anything grid-tied — grid-tie inverters legally require your country's grid-connection certificate (UL 1741, VDE-AR-N 4105, G98/G99, AS 4777…). No certificate, no utility approval, no legal connection. Off-grid gear escapes this; grid-tie does not.
5. Certifications: what's real and how to check
- Panels — IEC 61215 (performance) and IEC 61730 (safety), typically evidenced by a TÜV certificate; UL 61730 for North America.
- Batteries — UN38.3 for transport; IEC 62619 / UL 1973 for stationary storage; UL 2743 covers portable power stations.
- Verify, don't admire — ask for the certificate number and issuing body, then check it in the issuer's public database (TÜV Rheinland's Certipedia and UL's Product iQ are searchable). A JPEG of a certificate proves the vendor owns a scanner. Also confirm the certificate names their factory, not another company's.
- CE is a self-declaration — on Chinese listings it means almost nothing by itself. Ask for the EU Declaration of Conformity and test reports behind it.
6. Shipping, customs and duties
- Bare panels — no battery, so normal freight rules. Single panels travel fine by courier; pallets go air or sea freight. Glass panels need crating — insist on corner protection and vertical packing, and photograph the crate before it ships.
- Anything with a lithium battery — Class 9 dangerous goods. Legal routes: sea freight with DG declaration, or couriers with a DG contract (batteries under 100 Wh installed in equipment are the main exception). A seller offering cheap 7-day air on a 2 kWh power station is either lying about the route or mis-declaring the shipment — and a mis-declared battery shipment can be seized with no recourse.
- Duties on solar goods are volatile — the US in particular has layered Section 201/301 and anti-dumping measures on Chinese cells and panels that change year to year, and some shipments routed via Southeast Asia have been hit retroactively. Check the current rate for your HS code (8541.43 panels, 8507.60 lithium batteries, 8504.40 inverters) before ordering, and be wary of vendors promising to "handle" tariffs with creative paperwork — the importer of record (you) carries the liability.
- DDP vs DAP — for a first order, a DDP quote (duties paid) from the vendor's freight forwarder removes the nastiest surprises. Get the quote in writing with the HS code on it.
7. Where and how to buy
- Retail quantities — marketplace platforms with buyer protection. Accept that you're paying a markup for the refund path; that markup is cheap insurance on a battery product.
- Wholesale — the B2B platforms (Alibaba, Made-in-China, Global Sources). Filter for verified manufacturers, not trading companies, for anything technical — you want the factory's engineers reachable when something fails.
- Escrow always — trade-assurance style payment on platform. Direct wire transfer "to save the fee" on a first order is how most solar sourcing horror stories begin.
- Samples first — one unit by courier, tested hard for two weeks (panel: midday IV check against spec; power station: full cycle count, capacity test with a meter), then the volume order. A vendor who resists samples has answered your real question.
- MOQ is negotiable — listed minimums are opening positions, especially for mixed orders (panels + controllers + cable from one vendor).
8. Before the container ships: inspection
For any order big enough to hurt, pay for a third-party pre-shipment inspection (~US$200–300 from the established agencies). For solar specifically, the checklist worth sending them: IV-curve test on randomly sampled panels against the datasheet, EL (electroluminescence) imaging for microcracks, label/serial verification against the certificate, packing check, and for batteries a capacity spot-check and UN38.3 paperwork match. Balance payment only after the report.
9. Warranty reality
A "25-year performance warranty" is only as good as the entity behind it. From a tier-1 panel maker it's bankable; from a trading company that relabels, it expires when their storefront does. Ask who actually manufactured the product, whether the serial numbers are registered with that manufacturer, and who pays return freight — the honest answer to the last one is usually "nobody ships a panel back to China," which is why the inspection above matters more than the warranty page.
Quick answers
- Are Chinese panels good? The world's best panels are Chinese-made. The question is only whether the listing in front of you is honest about what it is.
- Why is this "600W" panel so cheap? Because it's a ~100W panel. Do the area math (§1) before anything else.
- Can I air-mail a power station? Small ones (<100Wh) yes; real ones travel as Class 9 dangerous goods by sea or DG courier. Anyone saying otherwise is mis-declaring your shipment.
